AWES, the wind energy division of Ainscough, is investing in its vehicle fleet, with the first delivery being two pickups and two crew vehicles as it responds to growing requests from our clients on the European mainland.
The four new vehicles provide additional onsite flexibility and enable a swifter response to customer requirements at a time when the company’s European reach is spreading.
The two Isuzu D – Max Diesel 2.5 TD Double Cab vehicles can withstand tough terrains making them ideal for AWES’ work in remote wind farm locations where standard cars are not fit for purpose and the Vauxhall Vivaro L2 Diesel gives greater adaptability on site for up to nine people.

The vehicles are being put into immediate use as they will take to the continent’s roads this week for a project in Germany for Vestas called Reinholterhode.
Ainscough Wind Energy Services (AWES) have expanded its senior operations team, appointing David Morran as Head of Construction.
David will be leading our construction services to the growing wind energy market, supporting our global clients and stakeholders.
David brings with him years’ of experience having previously held senior construction positions with industry leaders within the sector including Senvion.

Ainscough Crane Hire has been appointed by the A14 Integrated Delivery Team to provide lifting services for a major road upgrade in the east of England.
Stretching for 21 miles, Highways England’s £1.5 billion A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon Improvement Scheme, which began in November 2016, is expected to take four years to complete. It is the country’s biggest road upgrade currently under construction.
The works include a major new bypass, 34 new bridges and main structures, road widening and improvements to junctions.
Working on behalf of Highways England, the A14 Integrated Delivery Team comprises Costain, Skanska, Balfour Beatty, Atkins and cCH2M.
Improvements to the A14 between the town of Ellington, west of Huntingdon and Milton junction on the Cambridge Northern Bypass, will relieve congestion by cutting up to 20 minutes off journey times, and better connect communities in the local area.
Ainscough will deliver mobile crane lifting support to the contractors for loads up to 1,000 tonnes. Principally serviced through Ainscough’s local depot in Cambridge.

Almost 85,000 vehicles use the A14 every day, far more than it was originally designed for. A quarter of this is heavy goods vehicles, well above the national average for this type of road, highlighting how essential these works are.
The scheme will be open to traffic by the end of 2020, with some finishing work continuing into 2021.

Ainscough Crane Hire has completed the lift of a multi-million pound tunnelling machine that will soon start a five kilometre journey under the Humber estuary.
“Mary”, the 510-tonne, 160 metre long tunnel boring-machine, will take a year to cross under the River Humber from Goxhill in North Lincolnshire to Paull in East Yorkshire at a cost of £100 million.
On its journey, it will cut a 3.65 metre diameter tunnel 35 metres below the river bed. Once the tunnel is finished, a new 42 inch diameter gas pipeline will replace the existing pipeline which is carried in a trench closer to the surface.
The Ainscough team used a LR1300 crawler crane to lift the tunnelling-machine from a barge into the ground to begin its work for the National Grid.
Igor Scalas Ainscough’s Project Engineer said: “This contract was one of my great challenges to date, from the engineering difficulties to the adverse weather conditions. I would like to praise all the team involved from Heavy Cranes, to the transport team, Immingham Depot and the team on site.
“Everybody did a fantastic job, it was a great team effort, the client is extremely happy with the way we safely delivered the project. I am looking forward to starting a new challenge and continuing the same standard and service we provided with Skanska/National Grid.”
The giant machine was built in Badem-Wurttemberg in Germany and was shipped via Holland to arrive at Immingham Docks. Large sections of the machine were then moved from Immingham Docks along the A160 and towards the A180 ready for assembly at Goxhill.
It has been named after Mary Fergusson, the first female fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers. The machine was officially blessed by Grimsby priest Father Andrew Cole and a statue of St Barbara, the patron saint of miners and tunnellers, was placed at the start of the proposed tunnel.
It is expected to take around a year before the machine comes out on dry land in the East Riding village.
National Grid has awarded the £100m contract to build the tunnel to a joint venture made up of Skanska, PORR Bau GmbH and A. Hak. The work by National Grid has had a positive impact on the Humber economy, with 250 contractors already on site.
Ainscough Crane Hire will take delivery of two Liebherr LTM 1450-8.1 all-terrain cranes this spring as part of its strategy to invest in new innovations. Currently operating a 450-strong fleet of unrivalled diversity across its 30-depot network, the new cranes will be available nationwide via the company’s heavy cranes division.
Arriving in March and May, the cranes have a powerful 85-metre telescopic main boom a swingaround fly jib and a full range of lattice fixed and luffing jib attachments, it also has variable outrigger base and VarioBallast® meaning it can operate in tighter situations.
The LTM 1450-8.1 is manufactured to accommodate a variety of transport weight and machine axle configurations, making it one of the most road-friendly 8-axle All Terrains on the market.
“Owing to the new cranes’ flexibility, there is great potential for it to operate on infrastructure projects, wind farms, refineries and city centres where some larger cranes do not have the space to work. The flexibility of the machines is a key part of their attraction to Ainscough. Its VarioBallast® system, removable main beams and outriggers along with its single-engine design, make it stronger, lighter and with less transportation.

Ainscough Crane Hire has successfully completed works to repair one of Blackpool’s key road bridges, Squires Gate Bridge on Squires Gate Lane.
The company has provided lifting support for the bridge reconstruction, which carries the highway over the town’s southern rail link, to contractor, Story Contracting.
Squires Gate Lane is the main highway link between the town’s South Promenade, its airport and the motorway network at Junction four of the M55.
Over time, the concrete and steel beams supporting Squires Gate Bridge had weakened and work was required to replace them to ensure that the bridge could remain open to traffic for many years to come.
Using a Liebherr LTM1500-8.1 on a 165-tonne ballast the Ainscough team proceeded to remove the worn beams before lifting the new single-span sections carefully into position.
Dave Baxter, Technical Contracts Manager, said: “As the bridge was so close to the sea front, the wind was an issue and our team had to be very mindful of this while working on the bridge.
“It was crucial to place the crane in exactly the right position to ensure the correct radius and lift capacity to complete the lifts correctly. This was made all the more critical as the bridge’s wingwall encroached on the crane pad area.
“Working closely with the Story team, we completed the lifting ahead of the programme schedule and everything went to plan.”
The work is part of a repair programme being implemented by Blackpool Council over the next five years to improve Blackpool’s bridges.
