Power generation case study – Templeborough Biomass plant

Ainscough Crane Hire delivered a long-term lift contract at the development site of a new biomass-fired power plant in Rotherham in South Yorkshire.
Power generation case study – Templeborough Biomass plant

Project Overview

Based in the Templeborough area of the town, the power plant, developed by the Brite Partnership, is fired with locally sourced waste wood and has a capacity of 45 MW.

The power generated at the plant is equivalent to the energy consumption of 70,000 households, and results in an annual carbon dioxide reduction of 360 tonnes. Construction was delivered by a joint venture between Interserve and Babcock & Wilcock Volund, which won the £150 million construction contract from the developer.

Value adding benefits (headline stats and figures).

With the UK’s largest fleet of mobile cranes, crawler cranes and mobile tower cranes at our disposal, Ainscough’s national depot network and capabilities of lifting up to 1000 tonnes, has meant that a ‘one-stop-shop’ service for a series of lifts could be provided.

Ainscough was appointed to provide contract lifting services to assist with every aspect of the programme, from delivering cabins to piling ground works for building’s steel framework and installing the economisers into the completed building.

The wide variation of lifts that the project required meant that lifting workload was divided between the local Ainscough Depot in Sheffield and our Heavy Cranes team. The construction of the plant’s steel frame was successfully completed in the early stages of development by the Sheffield Depot, whilst the Heavy Cranes team assisted with the heavier lifts on the project such as the economisers.

The peculiarities of the site meant the Ainscough team have been put to the test and have developed effective solutions to a number of complex problems. One of which was access to the site being severely restricted by a single-track bridge, which crosses the River Don. The bottleneck and weight restrictions on the bridge meant that the required mobile cranes were too heavy to cross.
With few cranes able to cross the bridge, Ainscough’s 1,000 tonne Liebherr LTM 11000 heavy crane was stripped of its auxiliary components to make the journey over the bridge, with approximately 100mm of clearance on either side. The crane was then able to be built up in situ, on the live site to complete its tasks.
