What are Scope 3 emissions and why do they matter?

Scope 3 includes all indirect emissions that occur in the upstream and downstream activities of an organisation. Not included in Scope 1 and Scope 2 reporting.

Scope 3 emissions can include:

  • Emissions from external parties that source, produce, and transport raw materials and components
  • Emissions from assets leased
  • Emissions from the logistics, use, and disposal of products

For many businesses, measuring, reducing, and reporting on the organisation’s Scope 3 emissions is the most challenging aspect of achieving a science-based net zero target. Being able to collect robust and accurate data can be difficult, yet it is a critical process to understand the company’s true impact on the environment, present trustworthy information to customers, investors, and suppliers, and back-up net zero claims and targets.

Scope 3 emissions account for approximately 80-95% of total emissions for a large number of organisations and reducing Scope 3 emissions from the UK can contribute to reaching the UK’s Net Zero target by 2050.
