Birmingham depot sent two Leibherr LTM 1055-3.2 cranes to perform a tandem lift to set up a 40 metre long Demag gantry crane at Cranfield University.

Two cranes from Ainscough Crane Hire’s Birmingham depot have joined forces to deliver an interesting lift for Cranfield University in Bedfordshire.

The post-graduate and research-based university specialises in science, technology and engineering and it was within the University’s aerospace school that the two Ainscough cranes came together.

The two Leibherr LTM 1055-3.2, 55-tonne all terrain cranes were tasked with lifting a 40 metre long Demag gantry crane which would sit on board a rail track system in the roof space of an aeroplane hangar.

Used in the maintenance and servicing aeroplane engines, the gantry crane was carefully lifted into its permanent location above the hangar floor.

Birmingham depot manager, Peter Anthony, said: “Our client was a little nervous about the lift as they had never seen anything quite like it before. Tandem lifts bring with them their own particular stresses but our experience and knowhow came to the fore again and we delivered a faultless job for the customer.”
