This practical based course enables workers to assess the fire risks within a wind turbine and to perform basic firefighting tasks involving the use of portable extinguishers and fire blankets.

This syllabus delivers the Fire Awareness module of the Global Wind Organisation ‘Basic Safety Training’ standard.

A refresher course must be undertaken within 2 years. The use of customer sites will be subject to an assessment and the audit requirements of GWO. Delegates must be medically fit to perform the practical elements of this course and must sign a medical disclaimer to that effect.

    • Understanding of the development and spread of fire
    • Knowledge of the cause of fire in a wind turbine
    • Identification of signs of fire in a wind turbine environment
    • UK fire safety legislation
    • Theoretical knowledge of the contingency plans in a wind turbine environment including some detection and emergency escape procedures
    • Correct actions on discovery of a fire
    • Practical assessment of the use of portable Co2 and dry powder extinguishers and fire blankets
    • Safe evacuation from a smoke-filled area
