From refrigerated vehicles to lift plans and load charts, Hire Controller Sarah at Ainscough’s Bristol depot has built an impressive career over the past three years. We caught up with Sarah to talk progression, problem solving and what’s next on her journey…
Before joining Ainscough, I worked in refrigerated vehicle hire, a similar fast-paced industry where no two days were the same. My manager at the time moved over to Ainscough and told me about an opportunity at the Bristol depot. It sounded like a great fit, so I followed, and nearly three years later, I’m still here.
I started out on the Hire Desk and now look after Hinkley Point as co-ordinator, which has already given me the chance to grow and take on more responsibility. One of the things I value most about Ainscough is that progression feels achievable. If you’re willing to put the work in, the support is there.
Most recently, I’ve completed my Appointed Person (AP) qualification and received my red card, the first step towards becoming fully qualified. The AP role involves writing lift plans and method statements for crane operations, ensuring every lift is carefully planned and carried out safely. It’s a much more technical position, requiring a deeper understanding of cranes, configurations and the practical challenges of each job.
I decided to pursue the qualification because of my background in mathematics and my interest in the technical side of the industry. I enjoy problem solving – someone presents you with a challenge, whether that’s lifting or moving something complex, and you work out the safest and most efficient way to make it happen. That process really appeals to me. Ainscough arranged and facilitated the course, and I’ve felt fully supported throughout.
Now the focus is on building practical experience over the next two years so I can achieve my blue card and become fully qualified. I’m looking forward to getting out on site more, learning from experienced colleagues and continuing to develop my technical knowledge.
The culture here makes a big difference. Although I work in a small depot office team of three, I always feel part of something bigger. We collaborate daily with other depots, and everyone is approachable and willing to help. If you’re unsure about something, there’s always someone at the end of the phone ready to point you in the right direction.
It’s an industry that keeps you thinking, keeps you learning and keeps you moving forward – which suits me perfectly.
Outside of work, I’m usually on the water. I’ve been sailing since I was 11 or 12, after my dad joined a local club and got the whole family involved. I now sail on the River Severn as part of a club that runs races and events most weekends during the warmer months. It’s a great balance to the day job – swapping cranes for sails, but still relying on planning, precision and reading the conditions carefully.
