Ainscough supports Nusteel Structures in successful installation of new footbridge over M3 at Bagshot Heath

Ainscough Crane Hire has played a central role in the successful installation of a new pedestrian footbridge over the M3 motorway at Bagshot Heath, working on behalf of Nusteel Structures Ltd. The project was delivered for National Highways, with Taylor Woodrow acting as the principal contractor.

The bridge replacement forms part of a wider initiative to improve pedestrian access and connectivity across the M3. Following the removal of an aging concrete structure, the new footbridge will officially open to the public on the afternoon of Wednesday 6 August, delivering safer and more accessible crossing options for local communities. This project reflects National Highways’ ongoing investment in infrastructure that delivers long-term benefits to local communities and road users alike.

As part of the installation, Ainscough deployed two of its 750-tonne mobile cranes from its Heavy Cranes division – among only six of their kind operating in the UK – to carry out precise tandem lifts over the fully closed M3. This marked the third time Ainscough has delivered this specialist solution for Nusteel Structures, underlining its unique capability to support major infrastructure projects at scale.

The lift was carried out over a weekend road closure between the last two junctions of the M3 near the M25, with bridge components delivered in four main sections. These measured up to 34.5 metres in length and weighed as much as 24 tonnes each. After on-site assembly, the bridge – totalling 64 metres long, 5.6 metres high and 5 metres wide with an overall weight of 93 tonnes – was lifted into place in a series of complex tandem crane operations.

Sue Hunt, Area Sales Manager – South East, Ainscough, commented: “This project is a brilliant example of what can be achieved through close collaboration and expert planning across the supply chain. Deploying two 750-tonne cranes for tandem lifts is a rare and highly specialised operation, and I’m incredibly proud of our team for delivering it safely and efficiently. It’s always a privilege to support Nusteel Structures and play our part in delivering vital infrastructure that will benefit the local community for years to come.”

The successful installation was delivered during high summer temperatures, with multi-shift operations required to assemble and position the bridge. The operation was also made possible thanks to the efforts of Chevron Traffic Management, who ensured a safe, full closure of the M3 from 9pm on the Friday evening.

In addition to the new bridge, National Highways has also improved the surrounding footpath network as part of the project. This included vegetation clearance to enhance visibility and accessibility, further supporting safe, active travel in the area.

The new footbridge provides a safe and convenient crossing point over the M3, enhancing connectivity between communities on either side of the motorway. The upgraded infrastructure supports walking and cycling, aligning with national goals to promote active travel and more sustainable local mobility.
