With over 35 years of experience in the crane and lifting industry, our new Director of Sales for Major Projects Simon Massey brings with him a wealth of experience both on site and behind the scenes. We caught up with him to find out a bit more about him and his work.
I started off my career as an apprentice fitter for Grayston White & Sparrow, which was later acquired by Ainscough. Through learning the trade and applying myself, I wound up working as a Service Engineer in cranes and manufacturing, travelling the country to various jobs.
Over the years it taught me a lot about how our industry worked and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to work on so many interesting projects. But when my daughter was born in 2001 it altered my perspective. I wanted to spend more time at home with my family and less on the road.
My time had come to take a job behind a desk, and I joined Weldex as a general manager. Following my time there, I took on a role at Sarens as Sales Director, using my industry knowledge to guide me. After leaving Sarens, I became Group Chief Commercial Officer at Osprey, specifically the Managing Director of the heavy lift and marine teams.
I’ve had various dealings with Ainscough over the past 30 years, the team have always struck me as family oriented, high in quality and (most importantly) honest. So, when Andrew Spink got in touch asking whether I wanted to apply for the role, it was a straightforward decision.
When I arrived, I was pleased to see for myself just how friendly and genuine everyone is. The entire team are all working in the same forward direction, towards a clear, common goal and it is fantastic to feel part of that.
I want to drive forward sales within the projects area, and I bring with me genuine interest in the industry – not to mention my competitive streak and will to win! Away from my work, I love the outdoors. Whether it’s walking the dog, mountain biking or paddle boarding. I’m also an avid chef, and love spending time with the family.
